This series; Tribal Rhythms is a result of studying the art and culture of indigenous peoples around the globe. I was first drawn to the Australian Aboriginal art work for it's repeat pattern and rhythms. The colors used in the art of these artists have always spoken to me. As I studied I found that the art produced in this culture is a scared form of expression. As a non-native I would not be allowed to copy the patterns, so I needed to find a way to express these colors, patterns and rhythms in a quilterly way.
The same is true for the work of the Native American Indian of the United States and Central America. The images led me on a journey of discovering the mixture of leather (suede) and cottons as introduced by Europeans. This added an element I have never explored.
These four pieces are the beginnings of this adventure into the culture of the first peoples and their art.
